Tiritiri Matangi

Overnight Stay on Tiritiri Matangi

Marie has secured a booking for the 8th of October for an overnight stay on Tiritiri Matangi. We can have the entire bunkhouse to ourselves that night. All cooking utensils, facilities, showers and so forth are included in the fee of $30 per person for accomodation.

DETAILS
Where: Tiritiri Matangi Island
When: Ferry in the morning on 8th October, returning the following afternoon (departing Hamilton at 6am and returning late evening on 9th of October.

Tiri provides an opportunity to see some of New Zealands most endangered birds up close, learn about their species recovery programmes and see the outcomes of a co-management relationship between an island restoration group and DOC.We will be guided around the island, get lots of free time to birdwatch, lax out on the beach, swim, hike, look for kiwi at night and then wake up and go see the dawn chorus in the morning before a full day of fun.
Members and affiliates (who will become members!) of Waikato Natural History Society are welcome to sign up. We are not strict on who but WNHS members have priority of course.
Transport will be by car pool or minibus to the Gulf Harbour and we will catch a ferry with 360 Discovery to the island.
COST

The payment FOR ACCOMODATION is due by May 13th (we normally have to pay on booking but I have pulled some strings). Please note that you must pay when you confirm and your place on the trip is not secure until you pay the money. IT IS $30 EACH and the first 15 people to pay will attend.

You must book your own ferry ticket also and I suggest you do that within the next month or so. There is no other way of getting to the island so please book for the morning going over from Gulf Harbour on October the 8th, and returning on the afternoon ferry on the 9th. You can do the booking online. If we happen to secure funding for the ferry tickets you will be reimbursed, but expect to pay for them yourself at this stage. It should cost you around $60 return and you must leave from WHANGAPAROA/GULF HARBOUR, not the city.

Approximate total cost per person is:
Accomodation: $30
Ferry transport: $60
Food: $10 (chip in to cover the dinner in the evening and lunch the following day plus snacks - bring your own lunch on first day)
Also bring cash for the islands beautiful souvenier shop and money for a cheap dinner on the way home.

Contact Marie on mab57@waikato.ac.nz or 021808764 with any questions or dramas. I can promise it will be an amazing weekend as Tiri is truly an incredible place. Please note that at this stage, the trip is booked. Members can still join us for the day but will not be provided with accomodation for the night and so will have to return on the ferry the same day. For more information or to be added to the overnight stay waiting list, please contact Marie.
