Flora of New Caledonia

Dr Jérôme Munzinger
The flora of New Caledonia: state of our knowledge and perspectives

When: Friday, 15th April @ 1pm
Where: Waikato University, S.1.04

"In this talk I will introduce you to spectacular New Caledonia. First, I will present the special geographical and physical properties. Then, I will discuss some biological characteristics, including vegetation types and botanical characteristics. New Caledonia shares many plant families in common with New Zealand; some examples will be shown, as well as a presentation of the endemic New Caledonian plant families and other interesting taxa. New Caledonia has long been touted as a « piece of Gondwana », I will discuss what this means and about new geological data and a new hypothesis of origin. The state of the taxonomic and floristic knowledge will be considered, and example of recent advances in plant knowledge, dealing with hybridization and cryptic species. Finally, because New Caledonia is the world smallest “hot spot”, conservation aspects will be presented"
